A graduate of the School of Oriental and African Studies (BA Arabic and Persian), Alex Strick van Linschoten first came to Afghanistan six years ago as a tourist. In 2006, he founded AfghanWire.com together with Felix Kuehn. He is currently working on a PhD at the War Studies Department of King’s College London on the identity of the Taliban movement as expressed through their own writings and statements; as co-editor of two books written by former Taliban envoy to Pakistan, Mullah Abdul Salam Zaeef, one of which was published by Hurst and Columbia University Press in winter 2010; and a volume of poetry written by Taliban members together with Felix Kuehn to be published by Hurst (UK).

Decided I need to improve my literacy in programming languages (beyond Python, and some outdated stuff like HTML, MS-DOS and Basic). Luckily, the web has lots to offer. My top picks:

All of those offer a way to get stuck in, making code, trying things out. Will try to do a bit every day or two and see where it takes me.

To say “go” in the Tuvan language, for example, the speaker first must know the location and identity of the nearest river as well as the direction in which the water is flowing. “If you don’t know the river current, you can’t say the correct word for go,” Mr. Harrison said.
